Why are green algae considered to be ancestral to plants?

It is more that they are considered to share a common ancestor because they have the same photosynthetic pigments.

Because green algae and plant cells have the same kind of chlorophyll, they have similar wall cells, both make their own food during photosynthesis, both store energy in the form of starch, and both have two life cycles.
